Toy Review: LEGO Star Wars Imperial Shuttle Tyderium (75094)

LEGO Star Wars Imperial Shuttle Tyderium (75094)

Piece count: 937 - MSRP: $99.99 - Build Time: 2-3 hours

Tydirium was a Imperial Lambda-class T-4a shuttle stolen by Sullustan Nien Nunb from the Imperial Star Destroyer Shieldmaiden during a diversionary mission called Operation Yellow Moon leading up to he events of the Battle of Endor (apparently). It was also one of my favorite Star Wars ships as a child, and one of the most iconic. As such, it has been modeled in several different LEGO versions in a variety of sizes. How does this one stack up? Hit the jump to find out.

I started collecting Star Wars LEGO sets in 1999. I have bought multiple X-Wings and TIE Fighters along the way, and those ships have also been released in various versions by LEGO throughout the years, typically getting better. I bought my first Lambda-class shuttle model in 2001. Just looking at the box art between the that set and this latest one, it's obvious that this set is better. But how much better?

Construction -

Why 4 out of 5 stars? Stickers. Having built LEGO sets since I was four, I was spoiled by year after year of printed parts and very few stickers. Over the past 10-15 years, LEGO's shift towards stickers has bothered me considerably, but such is life. The build in general is a little repetitive but still fun because of how it all comes together.

What is really awesome about the way this set is constructed is how much you can learn about large-scale building and reinforcement. I learned several building techniques from this set that will help me build more stable large-scale custom models.

Parts pack -

There are some newer parts and fun ones, too, like Leia's cookie that she shares with Wicket the Ewok, and 3 thermal detonators (seriously cool). The colors are nothing special, though, mostly white and gray. The price-per-piece ratio is pretty close to the $0.10/1 sweet spot, which is nice and not always seen on licensed sets.

Minifigs -

The minifigs in this set are really cool, except for Chewbacca who is the same as always. At this price point, you'd hope for a few more minifigs, but they are expensive and would drive up the set cost. The printing on the rest of the minifigs is great. The bearded rebel commando is my favorite.

Playability -

This set is solid. It is easy to swoosh and the landing gear and wings are easy to manipulate. The dart shooters are unobtrusive and fun to shoot, and the spaces for the minifigs are fairly easy to access. The only feature that feels pretty useless is the loading ramp underneath.

Overall Rating -

This is a great set and a well-modeled version of Tyderium. I would rate it a solid value at $100, and an outstanding value at any discount. Keep an eye out for a similar shuttle with the Emperor and some imperial lackeys at some point in the future.
