LEGO Creator Blue Power Jet (31039)
Piece count: 608 - MSRP: $69.99 - Build Time: 1-3 hours
LEGO's Creator line of construction toys is a little different from the toymaker's typical offerings. Where most of its original-content and licensed sets focus heavily on minifig play, Creator is more focused on general modelling, interesting building techniques, and clever part usage. Many of the Creator sets have multiple building instructions as well, allowing for 2 or 3 models to be built from the same set of parts.
Over the years, LEGO has released a few different plane-helicopter-boat Creator sets (which have been pretty awesome), and the Blue Power Jet is the latest iteration of this theme. Is it a winner? Hit the jump to find out more.
Note: I have only built the jet model, so my review is based on that.
Construction - ★★★★★
While starting out a little slow, the jet build gets fun fast. There is plenty of advanced building and clever shaping in this set. When you get to the wings, it may be a little unclear how it will all work out, but when it all comes together, it is pretty amazing.
The tail fins are another example of interesting construction, similar in design to the main vertical wing of this set. On top of all this, the jet feels SOLID when it's done. There's nothing flimsy about it. Lastly, I really like the coloring of the jet. It looks fantastic.
Parts pack - ★★★★
Dark blue, End of story. There is lots of it in many different pieces that will look great in other models. The inclusion of a brick separator is a great touch and I love seeing those popping up in more and more $50+ sets. There are also lots of tiles, printed and unprinted. The set doesn't get 5 stars here because, all things considered, the parts are pretty pedestrian.Minifigs - ★★★★
Why 4 out of 5 stars when this set doesn't even come with minifigs? Well, the set designer took the time to make the jet's seats fit a pair of minifigs PERFECTLY. Too bad there aren't any jet fighter pilot minifigs!
Playability - ★★★★
Swoosh! This jet feels great in the hand, has retractable landing gear, and adjustable ailerons and horizontal stabilizers. You can also open up the engine compartment. All this being said, the Blue Power Jet is also a great model that looks wonderful on a shelf or desk.Overall Rating - ★★★★★
You might think I would rate this set a 4 overall, given the ratings above, but I love airplanes and LEGO too much to do that. This set is fantastic at full retail price and even more so at a discount. When I had finished the set, I had the desire to build one twice as large, it is that inspiring. Thanks, LEGO for another awesome plane-helicopter-boat set!
